Q I received an email saying I can get a university degree in any field. There was no mention of any cost. Are these degrees recognised in Australia?A These emails come around on a regular basis. The latest one is giving out degrees from prestige universities with no examinations, tests, classes, books or interviews. "Bachelor, masters, MBA and doctorates available in the field of your choice" and "You can become a doctor and receive all the benefits that come with it". They usually indicate that you can get your degree in days or weeks. The emails often originate in the US and refer to non-accredited qualifications, often emanating from someone's garage. Doctorate studies can take six to eight years, after completing other postgraduate studies, so how could anybody be providing credible qualifications in days or weeks?
Q I would like to get a job as an entertainer, a clown or something similar working in a circus. Do you have any advice about steps I could take?A Performers can find work in the circus or through other promotional areas, such as in shopping centres, the theatre or as children's entertainers. Your research could include contact with the National Institute of Circus Arts (www.nica.com.au), direct contact with Australian circuses such as Lennon Bros and Silvers and private booking agencies that represent entertainers. Related courses include a certificate in theatre and screen performance from the National Theatre Drama School, diploma of theatre arts and certificate in theatre arts from TAFE and bachelor of circus arts from NICA.
